Johannes Meintjes (1923-1980)

During our 2005 holiday in the beautiful South African town of Graaff Reinet we spot some very impressive work of Johannes Meintjes in the local Hester Rupert museum. Later on in Cape town we see a powerful portrait made by the same artist within the window of a small art and antique shop. It depicts a 1954 charcoal drawing. We buy what we presume is a self portrait and search for extra information upon our return to the Netherlands.

Thus we come into contact with Kobus Opperman, whom is hard at work setting up a website that contains the complete works of Johannes Meintjes. Amongst the hundreds of works on this website you can also find 'our Meintjes'.

Kobus gives us a lot of information about the versatile Johannes, whom was invited by galleries for exhibitions at a young age. Johannes Meintjes also has written books on other artists and the history of his great country South Africa. One of his books on the Boer Wars has even been within our library for many years now. We got three wonderful books from him about Johannes' diaries from 1941-1955, written in 'Afrikaans'.
He also informed us that unfortunately the work in our possession was not a self portrait but a portrait of P. de Wit van Zyl.
