Helen Verhoeven (1974) winner of the Wolvecamp award 2010

The jury report says that all three nominees – besides Helen Verhoeven are there Tjebbe Beekman and Bas Zoontjens – show high quality work.

'At first glance her work have a naive undertone, but when you look closer, you discover that the image rubs and wrings. The relationship of the individual to the group in which it resides, catches the eye, and what in the first instance seems so friendly is better watching a scene in which themes such as power and powerlessness, guilt and innocence, submission and dominance play a role' the jury said.

Helen Verhoeven is wellknown in art circles. Se was born in 1974 in the town of Leiden, studied between 1994 and 2006 successively in New York, San Francisco and Amsterdam, received several awards, exhibited in New York, Berlin, Milan, London, Los Angeles and Amsterdam (among others) and got publicity in leading newspapers and magazines.

The Wolvecamp award is a biennial Dutch art prize for painters under 40 years. Heartpool Foundation has established the prize in 1998 as a tribute to the painter Theo Wolvecamp (1925-1992), one of the founders of the Cobra Group in 1948 and born in Hengelo. The award includes a cash prize of €18.500,
a solo exhibition at AkkuH Hengelo and a contribution of €10.000 to a monograph.
