Ada Stel (1947)

Women dominate the oeuvre of Ada Stel. Her work is a continuous homage to women from all over the world, who so often play an subordinate role in everyday life. On her website she mentions women 'the silent force in history'. About this work, purchased in 2000 at Galerie Wildevuur in Hooghalen, you can say that Ada Stel succeeded in creating an impressive woman in abstracted form, who looks as an unshakable beacon. It's a woman you cannot ignore: charming and at the same time someone whose strong shoulders can bear a lot of worries and responsibility.

After the artist in the nineties visits South Africa and Zimbabwe, the 'woman' theme really comes to life. There she sees how women often doing thankless and invisible work and yet remain upright. That fascinates her: "They are proud women who radiate a great sense of self-worth." Ada Stel has portrayed many African and – after travelling to China and Japan – Asian women, whereby the rich colours of the clothing are a real eye-catcher. We are happy to have some of those in our collection.

The sympathetic artist, born in Appingedam, works with clay, which she composes herself. For the decoration she uses 'engobes, oxides, terra-sigillatais and various glazes', mentions her website. Its effect is fabulous! Initially she only makes ceramic sculptures, later she brings her women also in bronze and polyester to life. Polyester gives her the ability to create sculptures up to 3.5 meters high. In addition Ada Stel focusses more and more on painting. Characteristic for her modesty is that in the beginning she signs her paintings with MoiA and since 2006 with Ada; from 2008 she dares to put her full name on it. Also on her paintings women continue to dominate.

Ada Stel is now over 30 years a successful artist, who exhibits nationally and internationally. Home base is her studio and gallery ArtiSjok in Tjerkwerd. In a second studio, in Bolsward, she realizes her big, polyester sculptures and her paintings. She exhibits in her own 'Galerie Ada Stel', 250 meters from the Jopie Huisman Museum in Workum, in addition to their own creations also works by other artists.
