Hans van Herwijnen (1934)

Hans van Herwijnen was born in 1934 in the city of Amsterdam. He graduated from both the Rietveld Academy and Haarlem Art Academy under his motto of K=ME (Art= matter and emotion). Inspired by the German philosopher Hegel, Hans claims that "a work of art only arises if it has been crafted by the mind". Beautiful words and great ambition, which are certainly difficult to live up to.

When we visited him in 2005 in his Studio (Bad Nieuweschans),we saw the eye catching painting 'emotion'. People are well used to talking and writing about emotions, but painting emotions in a tangible form is something else.

The painting moves us, because there are just so many layers that Hans has hidden within the work. Every time we look at this painting we realise how complex emotion truly is. We find it quite inspiring that an artist can paint such an abstract state of mind, which can go 180 degrees from the deepest sorrow to the greatest bliss.

Hans paints both figurative and abstract-realistic paintings. It is always the mind's eye that determines the style and shape of a painting, the mind determines everything like a passionate conductor. No wonder then that Hans' work is so sensitive.
