Herman Bieling (1887-1964)

'He was unmistakable the main propagandist of modern art in Rotterdam', as Ed Wingen writes in 'Herman Bieling, from avant-gardist to realist' (2003). 'The cultural history of this city cannot be written without him.' Anyone who reads the book will be completely agree.

Hermann Friedrich ('Herman') Bieling - his grandparents are Germans, hence those German Christian names - is born in Rotterdam (Hillegersberg) in 1887. He follows evening classes at the Academy of Fine Arts and works then a few years as a decorator of the Grand Theatre and as a painter of altarpieces in Germany.

Bieling is one of the founders of The Federation of Visual Artists 'De Branding' (1917-1926), holding exhibitions almost every year, some of which with an international character. Although his propaganda of modern art also evokes a lot of resistance, the painter goes on stubbornly. So he organizes in 1932 in De Bijenkorf an exhibition of modern masters such as Picasso, Braque, Matisse, Chagall, Kandinsky, Mondriaan and Van Dongen and there hang also paintings made by him. A year later he founds the group R33, that may exhibit in the new Museum Boijmans.

Although most members of 'De Branding' pursue 'an abstract art with an occult nature', Bieling does not go along with that. Shows his work at first colourful and cubistic, impressionistic characteristics, later he comes to a synthesis. Throughout his whole life, however, he remains faithful to the figuration, also as the abstract art of Cobra demands attention. Besides painter, draftsman, etcher, engraver and lithographer he is a meritorious sculptor and member of the Dutch Society of Sculptors.

Herman Bieling makes many trips: in 1925 to Paris and Brittany, in 1928 to Mallorca, in 1935 to Corsica and Morocco, in 1939 to Finland and in the fifties he visits twice the United States (Long Island). He exhibits frequently, both in the Netherlands and in the United States, Germany, France, Belgium and England. His work is included in Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, the Hague Municipal Museum, the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, the Municipal Museum in Helmond and the Centraal Museum Utrecht. In 1964 he dies in his hometown Rhoon.

The oil painting 'Autumn Elation' demonstrates the magical forces of nature and her warm, exuberant colours. You can feel the amazement, yes the ecstasy the painter has experienced and immortalized.
